Candidate dressed as a penguin gets more votes than the Lib Dems in Edinburgh councillor election

A council candidate who dressed as a penguin received more votes than the Liberal Democrats in Scotland.

Professor Pongoo, an independent candidate in the Pentland Hills ward also known as Mike Ferrigan, ran for the City of Edinburgh Council.

He bagged 444 votes, beating the Liberal Democrat and Green party candidates for the area.

Lib Dem candidate Stuart Bridges got 370 votes and Phyl Stuart Meyer from the Green party received 322.

Ferrigan carried out the campaign dressed as a penguin, promising to go to every full council meeting in the costume.

Seven Lib Dems have lost their seats in Edinburgh so far, including the City Council leader, Jenny Dawe.

The Liberal Democrats have already lost 144 councillors and one council, with votes still to be counted.
