Top Prosecutor In Libya For Lockerbie Probe

Scotland's top prosecutor has visited Tripoli to pave the way for further investigations into the Lockerbie bombing.

Lord Advocate Frank Mulholland was joined by the director of the FBI, Robert Mueller , in a meeting with the Libyan prime minister.

Scotland's prosecution authorities have always believed the Lockerbie atrocity was carried out by a number of individuals in an act of state-sponsored terrorism.
Crown Office sources in Edinburgh say the meeting in Tripoli clears the way for Scottish Police officers to visit Libya to pursue further arrests.
A spokesman for the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service told Sky News: "The Lord Advocate, Frank Mulholland QC, and Robert S Mueller, director of the FBI, met with the Libyan prime minister Abdurahim el Keib to discuss the ongoing investigation into the Lockerbie bombing.
"The Libyan authorities confirmed that they fully understood the importance of dealing with the tragic issues left behind by Colonel Gadaffi and his regime, both in Libya and overseas.
"The Lord Advocate expressed his desire to the Libyan prime minister that there will be a positive response to his recent request for co-operation and the International Letter of Request."
During the visit there was no attempt to meet with Abdel Basset al Megrahi , who remains the only individual ever convicted of the Lockerbie bombing in 1988, which cost the lives of 270 people.
Al Megrahi, who has terminal prostate cancer, was released from a Scottish prison in 2009 on compassionate grounds.
